RE: computer crash

Lwmuddy: were still back at the starting point. Can you explain further what your computer is doing that you say is a virus? Waiting

RE: computer crash

Contrary to what you say, not having a popup blocker is not what caused your problem. Maybe keying on a popup is what caused your problem although I doubt it. I think something else is going on here. I have never had a problem with popups downloading from Amazon. Also, you don't explain what the problem is. Virus programs only stop and catch virus's. There is more here than what meets the eye.

RE: MS Retires Windows 3.11

Hey I liked 3.11 also, but it was a long way from a good release. I made a lot of money supporting it. The thing I liked best about it was that it was fairly easy to fix. Usually the same problem would get corrected with the same fix even when on a different computer. It also had only a few points of changes that needed to be made. For instance the .ini file was a lot smaller than the registry that is in use today. Oh well, we have to go forward don't we.

RE: Vista?

I would like to thank everyone who posted to this problem. People actually responded on how to solve the two problems which were then solved without bogging down into a pro or con Vista issue. Now I will add my 2 cents. Surprisingly, Comodo caused a connection problem with my computer. I went to Zone Alarm and the problem was resolved. I also posted earlier that Avast created a problem with Firefox 3.0 that was resolved by returning to AVG. What this should show users is that because of the many many types of PC's out there with the many many hardware/software drivers etc. not everyone will have the same problem and the same solution (but sometimes it happens) and it sometimes takes a fair amount of debugging to get to the correct fix. For instance I debugged the FF 3.0 problem for over 2 weeks. Now, many will say that is a problem with Vista. Others more knowledgeable will know that the problem lies with the many many different vendors that do not take all the care with their products that should be done, nor do it in a timely manner, see the problem with XP, ZA and a security update. Myself, I wish the moderators of this forum would moderate a little more to keep some topics like these on subject. Not writing about this topic.

RE: Apple screws up re ne Iphone

I guess I am confused. So you are saying that firmware isn't software. What is your description of firmware? Maybe it's a hard piece of something that gets sent over the internet line? If it's a piece of a coded program, it's software. Since the only company that can sell the Itouch or Iphone is Apple why wasn't that included with the phone? Apple knows what is needed because they put whatever it was/is on their servers.

RE: $#%@ Windows!

And actually ZA is not the best firewall. Do a google search on testing results of firewalls and ZA will not always be the top one. And when it is, it is the Pro version, not the free one.

RE: Apple screws up re ne Iphone

Notice the Apple apologists remarks. "it's okay, it's a great problem to have, it's att's fault". I love these things. Myself, when I buy something, I expect it to work right away, not have to get up in the middle of the night to download the correct software. Also, why didn't the software come with it?

Apple screws up re ne Iphone

Found at Comsumerist http://consumerist.com/ " I can't say anything bad about the AT&T store. I can say plenty about AT&T corporate and Apple. Just like last year, they were totally unprepared for the launch. Like many others, I also had problems activating my phone. I keep getting the same "An unknown error occurred" in iTunes each time I plug the iPhone in. I swapped the provided sim card out for the one I was using with my old iPhone, but still nothing. Then, as I was writing this, I received a text message and suddenly was able to make calls. I still get error messages when I sync with iTunes, but at least I'll be able to make calls while Apple and AT&T figure out who's to blame." Way to go Apple. Didn't you test this out?

RE: $#%@ Windows!

Thank you waroads for responding to some erroneous statements made by tyndall. The only thing I would change is that there isn't a need to do a system image to correct this problem. A simple back out plan to uninstall the update would have sufficed which is what everyone should have for any update no matter the vendor. And also, it only was for XP machines, not Vista. Plus it was not a critical update, just a fix for a problem that was there since March. It is always amazing to me how misinformed others can be about a security update and who should be responsible.

RE: $#%@ Windows!

Here we go again. Those with a grudge against MS openly complain about something that "MS did". How come no other firewalls were affected except Zone Alarm? What was MS supposed to do, test the change against the 10 or 20 firewalls out there? Just like all the complains against Vista when the majority of them should be against the software vendor that doesn't update or upgrade their software. Then there are those people that willy-nilly upgrade software without having a backout routine. I always love those people because I made lots of money undoing their lack of caution regarding their business. By the way, I have had to backout 2 software products when they wouldn't run correctly under Vista. 1 was Avast antivirus which I ran for 2 weeks until I determined it was causing a FireFox 3 problem. 2. was Comodo firewall which wouldn't allow me onto the internet after getting on a free open site. Sure it took me a while to figure out what was causing the problem, but I can quarantee you that I didn't blame Vista or MS.

RE: fyi. Vista SP 1 - no real difference

You are badly mistaken if you think that Microsoft "fixes" bugs. " Not even close to the truth. Why did you think that you would get a performance boost with SP1? Why do you have 4 gb of memory? No 32 bit machine can take advantage of the 4 gb.

RE: Firefox & passwords

Did you run CCleaner? it has an option to delete from Firefox and if you didn't change that, I believe the default is to delete most of those things.

RE: Degunk a laptop?

I stopped partitioning drives many years ago. There are 2 major problems with doing it. 1. When you guess wrong on how big a partion should be for lets say pictures, there is not good way to increase the size unless you repartion all of them or save some space to add on at a later time. Much much better to just let them grow within one huge drive. 2. If you decide to start installing programs on a partitioned drive, you cannot move that program without screwing up the registry when the programs use that to point to files. There is a way around that, but then you better have the registry backed up. And even when you are done, you won't gave gained much of anything as there is still only one hard drive and the spin and find time is still there.

RE: Degunk a laptop?

There are a few ways to learn more about your computer and how things work and thereby increasing your computer awareness. 1. back up your data and reinstall. You will soon learn which programs you forgot you used, which codes you don't have for the ones you remembered, settings you forgot about and how you set things in the first place. 2 G et a registry cleaner. This will show you many items that can be deleted from the registry. You can do that and the next thing you find out is that you will have to do number 1 above or at the very least, do a system restore because some entries where necessary. Then you will find out that cleaning the registry will do very little for start up speed. 3, Get a few of the free programs that will clean out useless files such as Tmp, internet cache, junk left over from installs etc, show you which programs start up at boot time and which ones you don't really need than such as picture, music, printer, etc. which will start up when you need them anyway. 4. Do 3 and then get some more memory and make sure you have a reasonable amount of free disk space.

RE: Firefox 3.0 won't import bookmarks

Go to the Firefox forum site and do a search for this problem. If others have had it, then there will probably be a solution.

RE: Comuter Reboots Itself

Teachers pet: What you real problem is, is that you responded to an malware popup which you should never do. Than you installed some software the popup recommended. Another major nono. Do a google to see how others have gotten rid of the malware. A lot of antivirus programs will not get rid of these as they aren't virus but a legitimate but questionable program.

RE: Comuter Reboots Itself

About a 90 percent chance that it is overheating and about 10 percent that it is a virus. Do all you can to correct an overheating problem and then you might look into a problem with the power supply.

RE: Intel to skip Vista upgrade

When I was doing contract work up to the year 2000, EVERY company I worked at had an Apple in house. Especially at that time, if a business was doing a newsletter or dealt with a lawyer they had an Apple. So figures like these do not mean much. When a company like Intel starts replacing all their PC (which will not happen in my lifetime) with Macs, than this kind of story would be interesting. I guess what we need to do is every time there is an anti Mac story out there, we need to post it here until the moderator gets off of his pro apple whatever.
